This is the gateway to Everest, where people pass through on their trek up. It is nestled into the hills on a high plateau with the most religiously significant peaks surrounding it. Visible on the bottom right is the Sir Edmund Hillary School, the biggest and best school in the region. There are few places on Earth where cultures like this live and thrive year round at this altitude. In the old days, the Sherpas mainly traded goods for salt with Tibetans over the high passes to the North, but today they rely mainly on tourism for financial survival. Climbing on Everest is still one of the most profitable but dangerous professions for these residents, as is evident in #EverestMovie. After the massive tragedies on the mountain, I know a lot of the most experienced Sherpa climbers, some of whom live here in Khumjung, have reconsidered if it’s worth the risk for them or their children.
